: event or agent?

Japanese makes you choose a camera angle: describe what changed, or describe someone doing something to it.

The mental model

presents the door’s change of state. presents someone causing that change.

: What happened to the thing?
: What did someone do to the thing?

Store the whole scene as a pair

Change or stateSomeone’s action

The usual package is versus . Learn the noun, particle, and verb together—not as isolated vocabulary.

Why Japanese often foregrounds the event

English may tempt you toward “we decided” or “someone deleted it.” Japanese often foregrounds the resulting situation instead. That does not automatically signal responsibility avoidance; it is simply a different event framing.

The aspect upgrade:

When a verb describes a change, can describe the state left after that change—not an action currently unfolding.

So is not simply English “-ing.” Its reading depends on the kind of event the verb describes.

Common learner trap

Do not choose a verb and mechanically attach or . Choose the event you want to portray.

45-second retrieval drill

— someone turns the air conditioner on.

— its resulting state is “off.”

— the date has become settled.

— “Shall we start the meeting?”

Mental hook: puts the camera on the thing and its change or state; puts it on someone’s action upon the thing.
