自動詞・他動詞: event or agent?
Japanese makes you choose a camera angle: describe what changed, or describe someone doing something to it.
The mental model
ドアが開きました。
The door opened.
私がドアを開けました。
I opened the door.
開く presents the door’s change of state. 開ける presents someone causing that change.
自動詞: What happened to the thing?
他動詞: What did someone do to the thing?
Store the whole scene as a pair
| Change or state | Someone’s action |
|---|---|
| ドアが開く | ドアを開ける |
| ドアが閉まる | ドアを閉める |
| 電気がつく | 電気をつける |
| 電気が消える | 電気を消す |
| 会議が始まる | 会議を始める |
| 車が止まる | 車を止める |
| コップが割れる | コップを割る |
| 予定が決まる | 予定を決める |
The usual package is Xが + 自動詞 versus Xを + 他動詞. Learn the noun, particle, and verb together—not as isolated vocabulary.
Why Japanese often foregrounds the event
日程が決まりました。
The schedule is settled.
パソコンが壊れました。
My computer broke.
ファイルが消えました。
The file disappeared.
予定が変わりました。
The plans changed.
English may tempt you toward “we decided” or “someone deleted it.” Japanese often foregrounds the resulting situation instead. That does not automatically signal responsibility avoidance; it is simply a different event framing.
The aspect upgrade: 〜ている
When a verb describes a change, 〜ている can describe the state left after that change—not an action currently unfolding.
ドアが開いています。
The door is open.
電気がついています。
The light is on.
車が止まっています。
The car is stopped.
結婚しています。
I am married.
So 〜ている is not simply English “-ing.” Its reading depends on the kind of event the verb describes.
Resulting state: あ、窓が開いてる。
Oh, the window’s open.
Ongoing action: 田中さんが窓を開けてる。
Tanaka is opening the window.
Common learner trap
Do not choose a verb and mechanically attach が or を. Choose the event you want to portray.
× 電気をつきました。
○ 電気がつきました。
The light came on.
○ 電気をつけました。
I turned the light on.
× 会議を始まりました。
○ 会議が始まりました。
○ 会議を始めました。
45-second retrieval drill
1. 暑いので、エアコンを__。
つけた — someone turns the air conditioner on.
2. あれ? エアコンが__よ。
消えてる — its resulting state is “off.”
3. 来月のイベントの日程が__。
決まりました — the date has become settled.
4. じゃあ、そろそろミーティングを__か。
始めます — “Shall we start the meeting?”
Mental hook: 自動詞 puts the camera on the thing and its change or state; 他動詞 puts it on someone’s action upon the thing.
