は vs. が: beyond “topic vs. subject”
You probably already use both reasonably well. The deeper question is what Japanese speakers are doing with information when they choose between them.
The core mental model
は says “As for X…”: take X as the frame and listen for a comment about it. が says “It is X that…”: identify X or introduce it as important information.
田中さんは来ました。
As for Tanaka, he came.
田中さんが来ました。
Tanaka is the one who came.
Same event; different instructions for processing the information.
Questions expose the information structure
誰が来ましたか。
田中さんが来ました。
The unknown slot is 誰. The answer replaces it without changing the particle: 誰が → 田中さんが.
田中さんは来ましたか。
はい、田中さんは来ました。
Here Tanaka is already established. The new information is whether he came.
が often means “pay attention to what comes before me.” は often means “hold this in mind; I’m about to say something about it.”
が introduces; は maintains
昔、ある村におじいさんが住んでいました。
Long ago, an old man lived in a certain village.
おじいさんは毎日山へ行きました。
The old man went to the mountain every day.
The first sentence places the man into the shared scene. Once he is established, the second sentence keeps him as the frame. Japanese is managing what is already in the shared mental space versus what is being introduced or identified.
は operates above case marking
| Neutral | Contrastive frame |
|---|---|
| 東京に行きます。 | 東京には行きます。 I will go to Tokyo—perhaps not Osaka. |
| 日本で売っています。 | 日本では売っています。 They sell it in Japan—perhaps not elsewhere. |
| コーヒーを飲みません。 | コーヒーは飲みません。 Coffee, I don’t drink. |
With に and で, contrastive は is added: には・では. With を, it normally replaces the particle rather than forming をは. This is a clue that は organizes discourse at a different level from ordinary case particles.
The identification trap
誰が日本語を話せますか。
Neutral identification: 私が話せます。
I can. / I’m the one who can speak it.
Possible contrast: 私は話せます。
I can speak it—whatever may be true of everyone else.
This also explains 私がやります: you volunteer by identifying yourself. 私はやります can imply “I’ll do it, at least.”
30–60 second retrieval drill
Choose は or が before revealing the answers.
- A: 誰__このケーキを作ったんですか。
B: 妻__作りました。 - 私__コーヒー__飲みますが、お酒__飲みません。
- 昨日、新しい学生__来ました。その学生__シンガポール出身です。
- 誰が → 妻が
- 私はコーヒーは飲みますが、お酒は飲みません。
- 学生が → その学生は
The big idea: は and が do more than mark grammatical roles. They tell the listener how to process the information.
