Floating UI
Patterns

Three floating panel techniques used in Japanese service sites, rebuilt with modern CSS. Scroll down to see them all in action.

↓ scroll to trigger the bottom bar
position: fixed + checkbox hack

Pattern 1 β€” Dismissible Widget

That chat bubble in the bottom-right corner. It slides in on load and the βœ• button closes it permanently β€” with zero JavaScript. Click it to dismiss.

CSS trick: #dismiss-widget:checked ~ .floating-widget { display: none }
position: sticky

Pattern 2 β€” Sticky Sidebar

The sidebar on the right follows you as you scroll. It uses position: sticky β€” a single CSS property that replaced 30 lines of jQuery.

Key requirement: parent must use align-items: start in grid/flex, otherwise sticky won't work.
position: fixed + JS class toggle

Pattern 3 β€” Scroll-Triggered Bar

The purple bar at the bottom slides up after you scroll 300px. JS only adds or removes one CSS class β€” the animation itself is pure CSS transition.

JS does: element.classList.toggle('visible', scrollY > 300)
CSS does: transform: translateY(100%) β†’ translateY(0)

Why modern CSS wins here

The AU Hikari page used floats, jQuery, and checkbox hacks for different things. Today:

πŸ”² CSS Grid replaces float columns
πŸ“Œ position: sticky replaces jQuery scroll-follow
🎞️ CSS transition replaces jQuery .animate()
βœ… Checkbox hack still works β€” and it's clever!
