Explanatory 〜んです
Present a fact as connected background, not as an isolated report.
The diagnostic
Why does this fact belong in the conversation right now?
If it explains an observation, supplies circumstances, asks for detail, or prepares a request, 〜んです may fit. If it simply reports a fact, です/ます is often enough.
| Job | Example |
|---|---|
| Ask for circumstances | どうしたんですか。 |
| Supply relevant background | ちょっと頭が痛いんです。 |
| Ask for further detail | どこへ行くんですか。 |
| Prepare a request | 相談があるんですが…。 |
