Missing, searching, finding

Report the situation before guessing the cause.

Four camera angles

Expected thing not located → search effort → successful discovery → finder’s action.

Package Focus Example
Cannot locate X; not necessarily lost.
Search activity; no success implied.
Discovery/result; no finder required.
Finder discovers X.

Keep the distinctions flexible

見当たらない and 見つからない overlap. 見当たらない is useful for an expected item you cannot locate; まだ見つからない emphasizes a discovery that has not happened yet. 見つかる does not imply the object found itself. なくした states that you lost it—stronger than simply not finding it in its usual place.
